How to Haul Amazon Intermodal Containers
How to Haul Amazon Intermodal ContainersAmazon’s intermodal freight involves hauling shipping containers that move between trucks, trains, and ships. As a carrier or driver, hauling these loads requires following specific Amazon and rail yard procedures.
1. What Are Intermodal Containers?
Intermodal containers are large metal boxes (usually 20’, 40’, or 53’) that can be transferred between:
Truck chassis
Rail cars
Cargo ships
For Amazon freight, most intermodal containers will be 53’ domestic containers hauled to or from rail yards.
2. Requirements to Haul Amazon Intermodal
Amazon Relay Access – Your carrier must be approved for Amazon Relay.
Intermodal Endorsement – Some rail yards require drivers to complete rail safety training (e.g., BNSF, CSX, UP).
TWIC Card – Needed for certain port or secure yard locations.
Proper Chassis – You must use a compatible container chassis to haul the box. Amazon may supply the chassis or require you to have one.
Safety Gear – High-visibility vest, hard hat, and steel-toe boots are mandatory at most yards.
3. How the Process Works
Step 1 – Load Assignment
Receive your intermodal load offer in the Relay App.
Check container size, chassis requirement, and rail yard location.
Step 2 – Rail Yard Pickup
Arrive with proper ID and safety gear.
Check in at the rail yard gate (using gate pass info from the Relay App).
Locate the container and chassis as instructed.
Inspect both the chassis and container for damage.
Step 3 – Hauling the Load
Secure the container to the chassis using locking pins.
Follow all weight and clearance requirements.
Drive to the Amazon facility or final delivery point.
Step 4 – Delivery
Use the Relay App to check in at the gate.
Drop the container in the assigned spot.
If required, return the empty chassis/container to the designated location.
4. Tips for Smooth Intermodal Operations
Arrive Early – Rail yards can have long wait times.
Double-Check Locking Pins – Ensure the container is locked to avoid dangerous shifts.
Watch Rail Yard Speed Limits – Usually 5–15 mph.
Inspect Chassis Lights & Tires – Rail yard equipment is often older; make sure it’s road-safe.
Keep Your Documents Ready – Gate clerks move faster when paperwork is complete.
